Ski touring in Greece wonderful for many reasons. The beautiful mountains are perfect for skinning, there is little if any competition from other skiers, accommodation is comfortable and the food sensational. Add to this the warmth of the welcome we receive on our travels and the makings are there for a memorable week. There is reliable snow cover and of course plenty of interest on bad weather days. There is much to choose from in northern Greece and our plan will be a flexible one. We will start by the sea at Platamonas and from there our first summit is likely to be 1978m Mt Kissavos (also known as Mt Ossa). We will then move to Vasilitsa for at least two days ski touring on the slopes of Greeces second highest mountain, 2631m Smolikas and on neighbouring lesser summits. The mountains of the Zagori area of northwestern Greece may then be graced with our turns. We will finish our trip at Metsovo to ski 2294m Lakmos. Each day will involve 600m to a maximum of 900m of easy skinning with very few, if any, kick turns.
