Introduction

In Africa you can climb Kilimanjaro via a mountaineering route and reach the highest summit of Mount Kenya.

The Umbwe Route, followed by the Western Breach, is undoubtedly the most exciting route to the top of Kilimanjaro that does not require the use of ropes. It avoids the crowds on the more popular trekking routes and is suitable for mountaineers with recent scrambling experience. On this expedition you will climb nearby Mount Meru (4,556m), a dormant volcano in Arusha National Park, before travelling to Kilimanjaro. Mount Meru is a very worthwhile climb in it's own right and the three-day ascent not only provides vital acclimatisation, but is a good chance to see plenty of wildlife and take in magnificent views of the Western Breach on Kilimanjaro.

On Mount Kenya Summit you climb via the McKinders Route on the South East Face of Nelion, crossing the "Gates of Mist" to the true summit of Mt Kenya - Batian (5,199m). The route on Nelion has HS/VS standard climbing and is about 19 pitches with some moving together, so you need recent Alpine climbing experience at AD/D on rock.
