Introduction
Bivio is situated just below the Julierpass in Switzerland, close to the St Moritz ski area. It has been a popular ski touring location for many years and has a wide variety of touring peaks with good access from the road or lifts. The tour will spend three nights in the Jenatsch Hut, which is famed for its food and hospitality.
Start point: Bivio, Switzerland
Outline Programme
| Day 1: | Course participants meet at the course base at 7pm. Briefing on the week's activities in the evening. |
| Day 2: | You will use the small lift system in Bivio to give access from a height of 2,560m to the fine ski touring peaks just above the resort, such as Piz Turba (3,018m) or Piz Lunghin (2,780m). From these summits you will enjoy long pleasant descents back to Bivio for the night. There will be plenty of time during the day to refresh avalanche safety and kick turns. Overnight hotel. |
| Day 3: | An ascent over the summit of Piz Surgonda (3,196m) to a north-facing descent down in to the Val Bever. Then a short skin up to the perfectly situated Janetsch hut (2,621m). The hut is famed for its food and hospitality and even offers a small sauna for its guests. |
| Day 4: | After an early breakfast you will head out on our first day tour from the hut with Piz Caldera (3,397m), Piz d`Err (3,308m) and the interestingly shaped Piz d`Angel (3,204) being possibilities. Ski descent back to our second evening at the hut. |
| Day 5: | Another day picking off a nearby ski touring summit, hunting for the best snow, then descending to your final night in the Janetsch hut. |
| Day 6: | You will set off from the hut traversing into the Val Laviner, ascending to the Piz Laviner (3,137m), the final 100m being on foot up a rocky ridgeline. The descent down to Preda from this point is one of the highlights of the trip, usually holding cold north-facing snow. From Preda you will take the world famous alpin express train, winding its way through the mountainside on the short journey down to Bergun. |
| Day 6: | You will use the lift system in Bergun to make an ascent of the Tschimas da Tisch (2,872m), with a long, remote ski descent down the Val Tuors and back to Bergun, returning to Bivio by a short train and bus journey and your final night in Bivio. |
| Day 8: | Dispersal. Breakfast will be provided on the last morning before skiers leave the tour. |
