A remote and challenging circuit, a good alternative to the Annapurna Circuit

Introduction

The Manaslu Circuit is one of the best treks in Nepal for those looking for an alternative to the more popular Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit treks. The Manaslu region is a restricted area and despite it becoming more popular each year, it is nowhere near as developed as the Khumbu or Annapurna regions. Jagged Globe has been leading treks to this area since 2008, when we organised an expedition that climbed Manaslu itself, the world's eighth highest mountain. Since then, we have returned each year to trek around it, with the crossing of the Larkya La (5,213m) being the high point and highlight of the trip. Typically covered in snow, but not overly steep, it is normal to cross the pass without the use of crampons (we take them just in case!) Overall, the trek is suitable for first-time trekkers, as well as those who have trekked in Nepal before.

Join us on the Manaslu Circuit

  • Enjoy the diversity of local cultures as you trek from 600m into the high mountains
  • Cross the remote Larkya La (5,213m) with views of Himlung Himal (7,125m), Cheo Himal (6,820m), Kang Guru (6,981m) and Annapurna II (7,939m)
  • 'Tea House' trek staying in lodges
  • Spare weather for crossing the Larkya La

Experience Required

The Manaslu Circuit is suitable for keen walkers/trekkers who are able to walk for 5 - 6 hours in a day, with a light rucksack. It is a good introduction to trekking in Nepal.

Note that in some circumstances, the earlier you book, the less expensive the airfare and the 'With Flight' price.

Itinerary

Here is an outline itinerary for this trip. A more detailed day-to-day itinerary is available as a downloadable PDF »

Typical Itinerary

Day 1 - 2:Fly to Kathmandu
Team members joining on a "land-only", please plan to arrive in Kathmandu on Day 2 no later than 1630, when your services will begin. Overnight hotel.
Day 3:Drive to Machha Khola (883m)
It is about a eight-nine hour drive to Machha Khola via Arughat.
Day 4:Trek to Jagat (1,415m)
You continue following the course of the Buri Gandaki, climbing and descending many ridges. Eventually the river valley widens and you follow a good trail to Jagat.
Day 5:Trek to Pewa (1,650m)
The trail crosses the river and climbs over a rocky ridge to the settlement of Salleri and then Setibas, where several mani walls indicate you are now entering a region of Tibetan influence. You pass through Philim and continue onwards to Pewa.
Day 6:Trek to Ghap (2,165m)
The valley finally widens and it's a pleasant walk through bamboo forests to the tiny village of Deng. You have now succeeded in crossing the main Himalayan Range, and the trail follows the Buri Gandaki Valley as it turns from north-south to east-west. This region is known as Kutang and is inhabited primarily by Gurungs who practice Buddhism. You head west up the Buri Gandaki Valley, contouring up and out of the canyon, then drop into the Shringi Khola Valley. More ups and downs eventually bring us to Ghap.
Day 7:Trek to Sho (2,880m)
The trail heads into the woods through fir trees alive with birdlife. In the middle of the forest you cross a wooden bridge spanning the Buri Gandaki, then make a long climb through bamboo and rhododendron forests to Namrung (2,670m). From Namrung you enter the Nupri Region and continue to Sho.
Day 8:Trek to Samagaon (3,541m)
Beyond Sho you get spectacular views of Manaslu, Manaslu North, and Naike Peak at the head of the valley. The trail emerges onto a plateau at Shya (3,530m). From here it crosses a ridge, enters and then exits a side canyon, then descends onto a rock-strewn moraine. You clamber across the boulders to emerge onto a ridge overlooking the extensive pastures and fields of Samagaon (3,541m).
Day 9:Acclimatisation in Samagaon (3,541m)
Samagoan is a growing village and a good place to spend two nights. Most teams push on to Samdo today, but you will benefit from additional acclimatisation.
Day 10:Trek to Samdo (3,872m)
Revitalised, you descend to the Buri Gandaki and follow the trail to Samdo, which is nestled behind a ridge (3-4 hours).
Day 11:Acclimatisation in Samdo (3,872m)
You have another acclimatisation day today, before moving to 4,494 tomorrow. There are good options for gaining more altitude above the village, achieving the maxim of "climb high, sleep low".
Day 12:Trek to Larkya Phedi (4,494m)
You descend on a wide, gentle trail to the river, then begin the climb toward the Larkya La through a huge gorge, then contouring the hillside (5-6 hours).
Day 13:Cross the Larkya La (5,213m), descend to Bimtang (3,720m)
The route to the top of the pass Initially climbs up a ridge, then ends up on top of the moraine at 4,695m. You descend a bit, then make the final steep climb to the pass. The descent follows the top of the moraine then drops steeply and traverses scree slopes (which can be snow-covered). It's a long descent to Bimtang (about 11 hours).
Day 14:Spare day
In case of bad weather. If this day is not used, you will arrive in Kathmandu a day earlier (your extra hotel night in Kathmandu will be included in the cost).
Day 15:Trek to Gho through pine and rhododendron forests (2,568m)
You'll descend through forests to Hompuk and down to a fork of the Dudh Khola. The trail continues to Gho (local name 'Ghowa'). 6 hours.
Day 16:Trek/drive out to Besisahar
2 - 3 hours trek to Tilje and 3 - 4 hours drive to Besisahar. Overnight local hotel.
Day 17:Drive to Kathmandu
It is a 6-7 hour drive to Kathmandu. Overnight hotel.
Day 18:At Leisure in Kathmandu
A chance to explore the bustling capital, with its beautiful temples and bustling markets. Overnight hotel.
Day 19:Fly home
Airport transfer. For those joining "land-only", you should book your flight home today.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary, but as this is adventure travel in a remote mountain region, we cannot guarantee it! Weather conditions, availability of porters and the health of team members can all contribute to changes. The guides and their Sherpa assistants will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but please be prepared to be flexible if necessary.
