The eighth highest mountain in the world
Introduction
Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world and has become one of the most popular of the 14 8,000m peaks. Our expedition will be expertly led and well-supported. Our price includes travel to/from Samagoan, near the base of the mountain, via helicopter from Kathmandu and oxygen for team members to use from Camp 3.
Join us on Manaslu
- Late-season expedition when there are fewer people on the mountain and less snowfall, but colder temperatures
- Our price includes 2 x cylinders of oxygen and use of a Summit Oxygen Mask
- Expedition showcases what you can expect if you join Jagged Globe on Everest
- Contact us for a copy of our Manaslu PDF.
Share this on Facebook We can organise this expedition on a ‘tailor-made’ private basis for groups of friends, families, clubs, charities or any other group. Depending on your mountaineering experience, you may want a Jagged Globe leader or go ‘self-led’ with the assistance of local guides. The cost of going private can be surprisingly reasonable, particularly if you take the self-led option. Please contact us to discuss the itinerary and your preferred dates. We will then send you a quote, with no obligation.

Here is an outline itinerary for this trip.
Outline Itinerary
| Day 1 - 2: | Fly to Kathmandu. Team members joining on a "land-only", please plan to arrive in Kathmandu on Day 2 no later than 1630, when your services will begin. Overnight hotel. |
| Day 3: | At leisure in Kathmandu. There will be time for us to explore the bazaars, shops and monasteries of this fascinating city. The expedition leader will also examine everyone's climbing equipment so that any shortfalls can be purchased in Kathmandu. The leader will attend a briefing with the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and obtain our permit. |
| Day 4: | Fly to Samagoan (3,541m). Overnight lodge. |
| Day 5 - 8: | Acclimatisation around Samagoan. Overnight lodges. Acclimatisation walks from Samagoan. |
| Day 9: | Move to ABC (4,750m). |
| Day 10 - 41: | Ascent of Manaslu (8,163m). We plan to use three camps above Advance Base Camp.
ABC to Camp One (5,500m)
Camp One to Camp Two (6,400m) Climbers are exposed to icefall potential for approximately 2 to 3 hours on ascent between camp 1 and camp 2. Having said that, the danger comes in short bursts within that time from ice cliffs hanging above the route. In other words you go in and out of the objective dangers within that 2 to 3 hour period. Fixed rope - approximately 500 metres required in short sections between camp 1 and camp 2 (including the section through the icefall).
Camp Two to Camp Three (7,300m) The hardest technical section on Manaslu is between camp 2 and camp 3. This is a ramp approximately 300 metres high and 100 metres wide and has an average angle of approximately 30 degrees. It certainly requires fixing. It requires sound skills in rope work (abseiling).
Summit (8,163m)
Summit day is low angled but care is required in the crevasse field, which starts approximately 100 metres above high camp. A ramp leads onto a plateau that is crossed to reach the summit. There can be heavy crevassing above Camp 3, requiring team members to move together roped-up, if the crevasses are covered. Some teams have become lost on the plateau in bad weather, meaning this section should be marked with wands at very frequent intervals, and GPS carried to mark the location of camps and key features. The summit ridge is exposed and is fixed with rope. Route Summary Aonach Eagach Ridge in full winter conditions would be a fair comparison to Manaslu technical difficulties. Otherwise the route is technically very straightforward. Clearly some significant but relatively well-defined areas of serac fall and crevasses fields, requiring caution and the use of appropriate strategies: speed, fixed rope, roping-up and navigation aids. |
| Day 42: | Return to Samagoan. Overnight lodge. |
| Day 43: | Helicopter to Kathmandu Helicopter flight back to Kathmandu (please be aware that the flight relies on clear weather and is likely to be very early in the morning). Overnight hotel. |
| Day 44: | Fly home Airport transfer. For those joining "land-only", you should book your flight home today. |
PLEASE NOTE: The above itinerary is not a fixed programme but is intended to give an indication of the likely events during the expedition. Please note that because of the nature of mountaineering on 8,000m peaks, it will be necessary to have a flexible plan in order to take the best advantage of situations as they present themselves. Any changes to the itinerary will be made with a view to maximising the benefit to the team members and of ensuring their eventual success on the mountain.
