Khumbu Climber - 12 October to 9 November 2003
Written by Leader Nev Taylor, November 2003
The expedition was a great success despite not completing the itinerary as it was set out. Our team being keen to try and bag as many peaks as possible. We experienced heavy snowfall at Island Peak base camp after everyone had summited on Pokalde, so we descided to retreat to Dingboche and attempt Lobuje East next. Here, we succeeded in perfect weather getting nine out of ten members to the top. We returned to Island Peak, with everyone wanting another crack at it instead of heading off over the Cho La to Gokyo. Island Peak was climbed on 1 November, again in perfect weather. Nine out of ten (all those who decided to attempt it) reached the summit. We climbed direct from base camp, which is the preferred option when your team is well acclimatised as we were by now. There were great celebrations in Namche Bazaar and a wonderful steak and chips 'pig out' in Kathmandu Everest Steak House. Overall, a superb trip which, for the most part, was blessed with amazingly clear weather.
