Everest Base Camp Trek - 7 to 28 May '05

Written by Leader, May 2005

While we lost a day at the start of the trek due to poor flying weather, and despite one heavy snowfall and several snow showers, we achieved all the highpoints of the trip; Kala Pattar, Everest Base Camp, the Cho La and Gokyo Ri. We even managed to make up the lost day.

Team members up Kala Pattar were Don Roscoe (aged 71!), Paul Shepheard, 'Dick' Dyer, Steve Roberts, Nick Prentice, Julian Marsh, Elaine Duncan, Dave Hogan and Rolland Jones. Elaine also paid a flying visit to Everest Base Camp with Bonny Masson. Kenton Cool and the climbers had just set off back up the mountain, but we heard Kenton on the wireless while breakfasting at Base Camp.

Bonny, Elaine, Paul, 'Dick', Julian, Nick and Dave then easily crossed the Cho La, with lots of stunning views during the 3 days it took to leave the Khumbu valley and reach the Gokyo valley. Roger joined them at Gokyo for the early morning ascent of Gokyo Ri. Again the weather gods were kind and we spent a long time on the summit absorbing the wonderful, panoramic views which included Cho Oyu, Everest and Makalu. A relaxed descent was made by all to Lukla, where we celebrated with singing, dancing, food and just a few (?!) alcoholic beverages!
